Jay and Jill Campbell, from Garden City, South Carolina, described their ordeal with a Norwegian Cruise Line ship in an interview with WPDE, their local ABC affiliate. The cruise line said the passengers missed the "all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time." Last September, more than 200 people got stuck in a remote part of Greenland after their cruise ship ran aground.

And Ulta Beauty and Foot Locker 's shares rose this week, after the companies reported better-than-expected earnings and a strong start to holiday spending on sneakers, makeup and more. Adobe predicts that full holiday season online spending from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 will hit $221.8 billion, which would be a nearly 5% year-over-year jump. If the estimate ends up being correct, that means shoppers still have a little more than half of their online holiday spending to go. The NRF said this week that its survey found about half of consumers' online and in-store holiday shopping remains. "People are just about tapped out, but [with] the holiday season, people are willing to even further extend themselves," he said.

This year, 59% retailers offer so-called "returnless" or "keep it" policies for unwanted products whose returns costs exceed their value, according to returns services firm goTRG, which surveyed 500 executives at 21 major retailers, including Walmart (WMT.N) and Amazon.com (AMZN.O). That information is "not something that retailers want out there" due to worries the policies could be abused by shoppers, he said. The firm helps retailers manage returns, which typically rise after pre-Christmas sales like Black Friday and Cyber Monday and continue beyond Christmas. The typical return costs retailers about $30. "You just can't afford to ignore it," she said of returns costs.

So are the start-of-the-season deals enticing enough for shoppers or are they holding out in a cat-and-mouse game with retailers? Michael Brown, retail industry leader and partner with management consulting firm Kearney, said the much earlier-than-usual jumpstart to holiday sales this year could be to blame. Shoppers will be holding out for better deals,” he said. Kena Betancur/Getty ImagesTotal holiday sales this year are expected to come in softer compared to last year. He said there were plenty of 25% off Black Friday deals mall-wide and some deeper 40% off promotions for early-bird shoppers.

The Mystery of My Mother’s Prayer Book

I could now surmise that my mother was given the book at some point before 1930, when she was perhaps 10 or 12. Below her address, she had written a poem:I pity the riverI pity the brookI pity the oneThat steals this book! Most likely this was something my mother had seen in an autograph book upon graduating elementary school. This was the home of my mother’s older brother, Dr. George Kanner, and his family. Rather than travel some circuitous route through multiple owners before landing on eBay, the prayer book had been in my family all along, in a house where I had spent many childhood sleepovers with my cousin David.

Singapore is trying to fight rising temperatures partly by making its buildings greener, literally. One central strategy is to literally make the city greener by covering rooftops and the facades of buildings with plants. Under its Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme, Singapore pays property owners up to 50% of the cost of installing green rooftops and facades. And the green buildings can attract tourists looking to patronize eco-friendly businesses. Toronto passed a law in 2009 requiring that buildings of a certain size have green roofs.

Adidas has to manage Yeezy drops very carefully, Gulden said, adding that the company's guidance was conservative. Adidas' 2023 outlook does not include the second Yeezy release, which is being sold through retailers as well as Adidas' own channels. JD Sports (JD.L) said it had started selling Yeezy shoes from the second drop on Wednesday. Citi analysts expect further Yeezy drops to generate 1.5 billion euros ($1.64 billion) in revenues and 700 million euros in earnings after Adidas' planned charity donations. Adidas donated 10 million euros in the second quarter and set aside 100 million euros for further donations to charities including the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism and the Anti-Defamation League.

Adidas and AB InBev influencer hangover may return

LONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Adidas (ADSGn.DE) and Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR) are showing some unexpected resilience in the face of influencer trouble. Belgium beer producer AB InBev, meanwhile, grappled with a different influencer headache. The world's largest brewer experienced an April consumer boycott after picking transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney to promote its popular Bud Light brew. And while AB InBev say 80% of its consumers still look favourably or are neutral on Bud Light, the brand was dethroned as the top selling U.S. beer in May. Still, Adidas trades at 10 times its forecast 2025 EBITDA, below its peer Nike's (NKE.N) 16 times, and AB InBev trails Heineken (HEIN.AS) by an even larger margin.

Adidas declined to comment saying it was in a "quiet period" ahead of its quarterly results due Aug. 3. Adidas expects bumpy year despite sales beating forecast

REUTERS/Shannon StapletonLONDON, May 5 (Reuters) - Adidas (ADSGn.DE) on Friday forecast "a bumpy year with disappointing numbers" ahead after a dip in first quarter sales for the German sportswear giant. Despite the 1% sales drop, operating profit of 60 million euros ($66 million) beat analyst expectations of 15 million euros for the company, which last year ended a partnership with Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West. Losing the highly profitable Yeezy line hit sales in the quarter by around 400 million euros, Adidas said, mainly hitting revenue across North America, Greater China and EMEA. Sales were 5.274 billion euros, down from 5.302 billion euros in the first quarter of 2022. Adidas' gross margin fell to 44.8% due to the loss of Yeezy sales, higher supply chain costs and discounts.
Kansas Hunts for Water as Aquifer Levels Fall

GARDEN CITY, Kan.—Southwest Kansas officials have long pushed a moonshot aqueduct project to send Missouri River water across the state to their region, where a $12.5 billion agricultural economy relies on a dwindling underground aquifer. While the effort has been dismissed as legally impossible and expensive, the persistence of the idea demonstrates how drought and a steadily shrinking water supply have created broad consensus that water policies need to be overhauled. In Kansas, where federal data shows that nearly every county was experiencing some level of drought at the end of 2022, water is among the most urgent issues facing the state legislature this year.

Inditex is planning to open at least 10 new Zara stores across the US by 2025. At least a dozen other Zara locations will be revamped or enlarged, the retailer said. "This is a market in which for every $100 of fashion sold, we take less than $0.50 of that," García Maceiras said. Foot traffic is up at Zara stores around the world, and Inditex reported a 23% jump in store sales in 2022 across its portfolio of brands, which includes Zara, Bershka, and Massimo Dutti. Inditex plans to invest 1.6 billion euros, about $1.7 billion, in expanding its stores and warehouses worldwide, including a new Zara store on Paris' Champs Elysées, and at least 10 new locations across the US.
Gulden said Adidas was still deciding what to do with its stock of unsold Yeezy footwear. One option could be for Adidas to donate proceeds from the sale of repurposed Yeezy stock to charity, Gulden said. REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton 1 2 3The split cost Adidas 600 million euros ($632 million) in sales in the fourth quarter of 2022, and Yeezy shoes would have brought in an estimated $1.2 billion in revenue this year. That, along with $200 million of one-off costs, would bring Adidas to a $700 million loss this year.

[1/2] Adidas Yeezy shoes are seen in a store on the day Adidas terminated its partnership with the American rapper and designer Kanye West, now known as Ye, in Garden City, New York, U.S., October 25, 2022. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Gulden said Adidas would keep partnering not just with athletes but celebrities and artists. "You build credibility as a performance brand by being with athletes, but there's very few athletes that you can do lifestyle with." Gulden did, however, hint at a change of emphasis at Adidas, saying the company needs to refocus on its core. The Jordan brand brought in $5.1 billion of sales in Nike's 2022 fiscal year, up 7% from 2021, according to the company's 2022 annual report.
The pandemic disproportionately impacted the lowest-performance schools and students, the McKinsey report also found, putting them further behind their high-performing peers. "The schools that had the greatest need suffered the greatest losses," Baker said. "Each district is so different," said Kusum Sinha, superintendent of Garden City Public Schools in New York, which is considered high performing. With federal funding, the Garden City school district hired more staff, added before- and after-school tutoring in math and reading, and created an in-person and online summer program. "If we run out of money, we're going to have to figure out a way to continue," Sinha said.
